Join us for a rare opportunity to learn from world-renowned master miniature painter Ajay Kumar Sharma, who joins us from India. Discover the elegance of traditional architecture and nature through the art of Indian miniature painting, using handmade Vasli paper and handmade pigments. Under Ajay’s guidance, experience the beauty of “the art of the line” and bring luminous gold leaf details to life.

Ajay Sharma is a master of traditional Indian miniature painter, recognized throughout India and Internationally. He teaches all over the world, including an annual residency at Princes School in London, and receives many students, Artist at his studio in Jaipur, including Fulbright scholars from USA.

Process: What you will learn

1. base color with kharia (chalk) and gum arabic, then burnishing on the reverse
2. drawing or tracing the design either by pencil or with a brush free hand (depends on artist and subject)
3. filling in opaque flat gouache colors (as a block), then burnishing
4. outline with watercolor or black kajil (ink made from soot) with squirrel hair brush
5. shading and adding detailed designs, then burnishing
6. gilding with either gold-leaf or liquid gold

What you will use Pigments from refined and purified minerals Shells to mix color Wasli paper, often pasted with old used paper Squirrel hair brushes Kharia (chalk), refined and purified Gum Arabic Water Agate for burnishing
